January 05, 2024 | Wrestling
LANCASTER, PA - The Princeton wrestling team capped off the 2024 Franklin and Marshall Open Friday evening. The freshman Drew Heethuis placed 5th and went 5-1 on the day.
At 125, Drew Heethuis started the day with an impressive pinning streak. In his initial match during the round of 32, he secured a victory by fall against Gunner Havens from Kent State, with a score of 3-0 in 1:01. Shortly thereafter, he battled his way to the quarterfinals by triumphing over Cooper Shore from Campbell University with another pin, achieving a score of 5-0 in just 29 seconds. The freshman then faced off against the #1 seed, Troy Hohman from NC State. As regulation concluded, the score stood tied at two each. Unfortunately, Heethuis couldn't capitalize during the extra time and ultimately lost 5-2 due to a sudden victory takedown.
In the consolation rounds, Heethuis secured his third victory of the day by defeating Tommy Link (Army Prep) with a 6-2 decision. This triumph in the Consolation of 8 #2 propelled him to the Consolation of 4, where he continued to battle for a 5th place finish. During the Consolation of 4 match, Heethuis displayed resilience in extra time, securing a takedown in the fourth period to clinch a 4-1 victory over Nick Treaster (Unattached-Unrostered). The freshman's day concluded with a no-contest result against Campbell's Cooper Shore, earning him a 5th place position on the podium.
At 157, Zander Silva, wrestling unattached, saw time in the spotlight. He opened the tournament with a hard fought decision over Kaden Milheim (Unattached-American University), 6-3. It was his round of 16 bout that was a considerable comeback win. Trailing 4-1 in the third period, Silva captured a takedown at 0:51 that put him at even with his opponent, Zach Karagias from NC State. After a scoreless 4th through 6th period, the freshman earned a three points on a takedown in the 7th period and secured his path to a quarterfinals appearance with a 7-4 win by decision. Silva, after making a quarterfinals appearance in his debut in the F&M Open, went on to drop his next two matches of the tournament by a 17-0 tech fall to #5 Carter Baer (Binghamton) and 7-2 decision against Fin Nadeau (Binghamton).
At 285, Sebastian Garibaldi found a rhythm starting all the way from the round 64. In his first bout of the day, Garibaldi faced Brentan Simmermam (Kent State) and won by major decision, 13-3, scoring off of three takedowns, two escapes, and riding time. In his round of 32 match, he dominated Jordan Gabriel from the University of Maryland and got the pin at 1:13 in the first period. Garibaldi went on to win his next match in the round of 16, knocking off the seven-seeded Josh Harkless by decision, 6-2. In the quarterfinals, Garibaldi was met by Taye Ghadiali (Campbell U). Unfortunately for the Tigers, Ghadiali won by major decision, 17-4.
