Tigers Top Harvard, Clinch Ivy League Tournament Bid
October 19, 2024 | Women's Soccer
An upper-division finish is in the bag for the Princeton women's soccer team after Saturday's 3-1 win over Harvard, and over the next two weeks, the Tigers will be aiming not only to be in the four-team tournament, but to host it as the Ivy's top seed.
On that path, three points on Saturday against the Crimson would have helped, and that's what the Tigers got after goals from Kayla Wong, Alexandra Barry and Pietra Tordin as Princeton outshot Harvard 20-13 overall and 12-3 on goal.
With Saturday's results around the league, Princeton (9-4, 4-1) stands in second place in the Ivy League, one point back of Columbia (4-0-1, 13 points), and four points up on Brown (2-1-2, eight points) and five up on Yale (2-2-1, seven points), which will enter next weekend in the last of the Ivy tournament spots with two games left to play. Cornell (2-3, six points), Harvard (1-3-1, four points), Penn (0-2-3, three points) and Dartmouth (0-3-2, two points) round out the standings.
Princeton opened the scoring with less than 18 minutes before halftime when Tordin stopped an attempted clearing attempt by Harvard keeper Rhiannon Stewart in the 18-yard box and centered it for Wong, who slid it past the lone Harvard defender behind Stewart and inside the left post.Â
With less than two minutes before halftime, Princeton pushed the lead to 2-0 when Zoe Markesini sent a ball forward from the Tigers' defensive half for a charging Drew Coomans, who worked her way around a Harvard defender and to the endline before sending a cross to Barry at the far post for Barry to body the ball into the goal.
Â
The Tiger lead became 3-0 six-plus minutes into the second half when Wong was fouled in the 18 and Tordin nailed the penalty kick.Â
Harvard spoiled the shutout with Aslaug Gunnlaugsdottir's finish at the goal line with 28-plus minutes left in the game, but Princeton kept the Crimson off the board from there.
Princeton will head to UMBC for the Ivy League's final non-league game of the regular season before returning to league play for the Tigers' regular-season home finale next Saturday, Oct. 26, hosting Dartmouth.Â
