In what will be the final non-league game of the Ivy League regular season, the Princeton women's soccer team will head to UMBC on Tuesday night.
at UMBC, Tuesday, 7 p.m. | ESPN+ | Live Stats
The Ivy Race: Heading into the final two Saturdays, Columbia (4-0-1, 13 points) is one point up on Princeton (4-1-0, 12 points) with Brown (2-1-2, eight points) and Yale (2-2-1, seven points) currently in the final two Ivy League Tournament spots. Cornell (2-3-0, six points), Harvard (1-3-1, four points), Penn (0-2-3, three points) and Dartmouth (0-3-2, two points) round out the standings. The Ivy League title, which goes to the regular-season winner, and the right to host the Ivy League Tournament may come down to Princeton's trip to Columbia, set for Nov. 2. The Tigers will host Dartmouth on Saturday while Columbia will go to Yale, but even if the Tigers were to win on Saturday and the Lions were to lose on Saturday, the winner of the Princeton-Columbia game would win the Ivy title and host the Ivy tournament.Â
The Series vs. UMBC: Princeton and UMBC have never met in women's soccer. The last America East team Princeton faced was the one that won the 2021 America East tournament and represented the league in the NCAAs that year as the Tigers beat Vermont in the first round of the 2021 NCAA tournament at Sherrerd Field in Princeton.Â
On UMBC: The Retrievers are 5-9-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the America East, standing in eighth place. The top six teams will make the America East tournament, with UMBC at four points and five points out of sixth. UMBC will be looking for its first win of October and will aim to snap a four-game skid in doing so, with a 2-1 win over UMass Lowell on Sept. 29 as the Retrievers' last win. Natasha Munro leads UMBC's eight goal scorers with five goals, and Abbey Cowles has played the majority of the minutes in goal, holding a 2.11 GAA.Â
Stingy Tigers: Princeton has outscored its opponents 27-8 this season and has turned in six shutouts, allowed one goal six times, and has allowed more than one goal in a game only once this season, the 2-1 loss to Yale that has been Princeton's only league loss.Â
Stat Rankings: As a team, Princeton entered the week ranked 19th in the nation in save percentage (.855) and 21st in GAA (0.615). Tyler McCamey is 26th in save percentage, at .849.Â
On Offense: Princeton has had 13 goal scorers this season with Isabella Garces, Alexandra Barry and Pietra Tordin co-leading the team with four goals and Brooke Dawahare next with three. Seven of the 13 goal scorers scored their first career goals this season, and 22 of the 27 goals have come from non-seniors.Â
Between the Posts: Tyler McCamey has played 12 of the team's 13 games and has an 0.67 GAA with five of the team's six shutouts. Cecilia Cerone turned in a shutout in her first career start earlier this month against Lafayette.
Tordin Climbs the Chart: Junior Pietra Tordin, who made her season debut on Oct. 1 after helping Team USA to third place at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Colombia, stands 12th in program history with 24 career goals. Just one more goal will tie her for 10th in program history, and with five more, she'd be alone in seventh place. Tyler Lussi '17 holds the program record with 53 goals, and two of the top three in program history played for Sean Driscoll, with Mimi Asom '19 third at 43. At the U-20 WWC, Tordin scored four goals, leading Team USA and becoming the first U.S. player to net a hat trick at the U-20 WWC, which she did against Paraguay in the group-stage final, since 2018, and the team's highest goal scorer at the U-20 WWC since 2012. Tordin was one of two Tigers at the U-20 WWC, with sophomore backliner Zoe Markesini helping Canada to the knockout round. It was Markesini's second age-group WWC with Canada, along with the U-17 event in India in 2022.Â
Coach Driscoll: A three-time Ivy Coach of the Year, Sean Driscoll has led Princeton to three Ivy titles, five NCAA tournament appearances, four trips to the NCAA second round and one of those to the NCAA quarterfinals, Sean Driscoll leads all active Ivy League coaches in wins at their current posts, with 102. Next are Brown's Kia McNeill (84), Columbia's Tracey Bartholomew (80), and Harvard's Chris Hamblin (79).Â
Up Next: Princeton will recognize its seven seniors and host Dartmouth in the Tigers' final Ivy League home game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
