Jasinski's Free Kick Goal Leads Princeton to 1-0 Victory Over Yale
October 26, 2024 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. – Jack Jasinski's free kick goal made the difference in the Princeton men's soccer team's victory over Yale, 1-0, at home in Roberts Stadium on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Princeton jumps to 4-1 in the Ivy League and 8-5 overall, while Yale falls to 4-9-1 and 1-4 in conference play.
After Saturday's contests, the Tigers also clinched a spot in the 2024 Ivy League Men's Soccer Tournament, which will be played on November 15 and 17 at the site of the no. 1 seed. The berth is the program's first following the inaugural tournament in 2023.
"Yale is a challenging team to play, but we did a good job of not letting it get to us. We got the first goal, and our back line was rock solid tonight. The guys in the back were just warriors, and JJ had an awesome day. With every win, the next game becomes even bigger. We're proud of how we performed today and look ahead to Seton Hall on Tuesday and Dartmouth next weekend." - Head Coach Jim Barlow
HOW IT HAPPENED
Yale came out looking dangerous, registering two shots that were saved by the Tiger keeper Andrew Samuels and blocked by captain defender Issa Mudashiru.
Ramping up the offensive energy, the Tigers generated some chances with a through-ball to Daniel Ittycheria in the 16th minute and a corner kick in the 19th.
In the 24th minute, with a free kick 10 yards outside the box, Jasinski sent the ball soaring over Yale's wall and dipping down into the top right corner of the net, putting the Tigers up 1-0.
Despite taking four more shots and earning two more corner kicks, Princeton would not add another and the 1-0 score stood at halftime.
Coming out of the half, Princeton continued its search for a second goal while Yale intensified its search for an equalizer. Still, the Tiger defense was able to hold the Bulldogs to only one shot during the second half.
Princeton kept up the energy while generating offensive chances, including a Kevin and Kristian Kelley combination play that resulted in a goal getting called off in the 80th minute, but none of the five shots taken in the second half would find the back of the net.
Ultimately, the clock ran down as the 1-0 score stood, delivering the Tigers their fourth Ivy League win this season.
