Tigers Take Another Close One Against Penn, Get to 3-0 in the Ivy
October 09, 2024 | Women's Soccer
For the sixth time in the last seven meetings against Penn, the final was Princeton 1, Penn 0.
Wednesday night at Roberts Stadium saw the latest installment in the series, which hasn't seen a game decided by more than one goal since 2012. Since 2017, the only game not to end 1-0 for Princeton was a 2-1 Tiger win in 2022.Â
The win extended Princeton's streak in the series to seven straight victories while going unbeaten in the last nine.Â
From early on, it looked like it'd be Princeton's night, at least at some point. Princeton outshot the Quakers 12-2 overall in the first half, but Penn netminder Annabel Austen saved all six shots on goal in what finished as a scoreless first half.
The tie persisted until the 63rd minute, when Drew Coomans sent a ball forward for Lily Bryant, who fought off three Penn defenders and slid a shot across the goal mouth and past a diving Austen to get Princeton on the board. It was the second straight game that Bryant, who has scored her first two goals of 2024 over the last two games, opened the scoring for the Tigers.
Â
Princeton got a scare that its shutout streak would end and perhaps the win would be in jeopardy as well when a would-be Penn goal with less than 16 minutes left was waved off with Penn offsides.Â
The Tigers closed it out, extended their shutout streak to 370:54, the program's longest since 2021, and Tyler McCamey's two saves earned the senior her 15th career shutout and her 26th career win. The Tigers ended up outshooting Penn 21-9 overall and 11-2 on goal.
Princeton will take an 8-3 overall record and its 3-0 mark in the Ivy League into a Sunday visit to Yale. With the third date of league play in the books, Princeton stands even with Columbia with nine points, three better than Brown and five up on fourth-place Yale, which is one point up on fifth-place Cornell for the final spot in the Ivy League tournament with four league games for each team still ahead.
