Yale Gets Pair of First-Half Goals to Hold Off Women's Soccer
October 13, 2024 | Women's Soccer
Yale's Alanna Butcher arced in a pair of goals less than five minutes apart just before the first half reached its midpoint on Sunday afternoon, and despite a Kayla Wong goal with 20-plus minutes still to play, Yale held on to deal the Princeton women's soccer team a 2-1 defeat, its first of the Ivy League season.
Princeton (8-4, 3-1) will host Harvard on Saturday at Roberts Stadium in the fifth of seven Ivy League games of the season.
Tiger keeper Tyler McCamey stopped three of Yale's five shots on goal while Bulldog netminder Anna Shamgochian stopped two of Princeton's three shots on goal. Yale outshot Princeton 9-7 overall.Â
Wong's goal came in the 69th minute, starting on a Drew Coomans throw-in. After Pietra Tordin bodied the throw-in down, Brooke Dawahare took control of the loose ball and centered it for Wong, who created space from her Yale defender and threaded a shot through the Bulldog back line, past a diving Shamgochian and inside the left post.
Â
Though Dawahare came close to tying it with a shot off the crossbar inside the final minute, Princeton came up short of the equalizer as Yale avoided what would have been its first back-to-back losses to Princeton since 2017 and 2018.
With all of Sunday's games complete, Princeton (3-1, nine points) stands in second place in the Ivy, behind only Columbia (4-0, 12 points) and in front of Yale (2-1-1, seven points), Brown (2-1-1, seven points), Harvard (1-2-1, four points), Cornell (1-3, three points), Penn (0-2-2, two points) and Dartmouth (0-3-1, one point). Princeton has Harvard (Oct. 19), Dartmouth (Oct. 26) and Columbia (Nov. 2) still on the Ivy schedule, with the first two of those three games at home.
