Princeton Falls In OT To Harvard In Ivy Final, Awaits NCAA Selections
November 10, 2024 | Field Hockey
Princeton and Harvard battled through two overtime field hockey games this season, with each team with one win. Clearly there is very little that separates them.
What does, though, is now big.
Harvard's Martha le Huray scored 4:11 into overtime to give the Crimson a 2-1 win over Princeton in the Ivy League tournament championship game. The outcome gives Harvard the league's automatic NCAA tournament bid and leaves Princeton hoping to be on the right side of the bubble when selections are announced Sunday at 10 pm.
Princeton won the regular season meeting between the two, also 2-1, also in overtime, and that win gave Princeton the Ivy League championship and the host role in the tournament. The game Sunday was a rematch not only of that game but also of the final a year ago in the first Ivy tournament, which Harvard won — also 2-1 — on a goal in the final minute.
The latest 2-1 verdict was an intense, tight, great game from start to finish. It was scoreless into the fourth quarter and stayed that way when Princeton goalie Robyn Thompson turned away a penalty stroke, but the Crimson broke through when le Huray scored off a penalty corner with 2:35 to play.
Just when it seemed like it was over, though, Princeton came back, as Ella Cashman got the equalizer with only 59 seconds to play, assisted from Beth Yeager, to force the OT.
Cashman, Yeager and Thompson were named to the All-Tournament team.

So Harvard scored with 2:35 to go, and the Cashman from Yeager ties it with 59 seconds left. We head to OT in the Ivy tournament final.
