Defense Makes Yeager's Goal Stand Up In 1-0 NCAA Win Over Boston College
November 15, 2024 | Field Hockey
The clock at times seemed to be counting up instead of down, and now, deep into the fourth quarter in the opening round of the NCAA field hockey tournament, Boston College had Princeton on its heels a bit. One penalty corner. Then another. Then another. And yet another.
One more time into the circle. One more time preventing the ball from leaving that side of the field. It seemed like BC's chance was coming.
And yet, each time, the Princeton defense responded. When the clock finally, finally reached all zeroes, it was Princeton who had survived and advanced.
Beth Yeager scored off a penalty corner late in the first quarter, and Princeton's defense did the rest, taking down No. 4 Boston College 1-0 to advance to Sunday's quarterfinal round. It'll be Princeton against the host team Saint Joseph's on Ellen Ryan Field at noon, and for the winner there will be a trip to the Final Four at Michigan.
The victory was also the 100th at Princeton for head coach Carla Tagliente and associate head coach Dina Rizzo.
Robyn Thompson had to make only one save, but it was a big one late in the fourth. Beyond that, her defense took care of everything. It was the best game of the season for Ottilie Sykes and Gracie McGowan. Clem Houlden was everywhere. All three went all 60 minutes. Yeager and Ella Cashman were also huge on the penalty corner defense.
Saint Joseph's defeated Lafayette 1-0 in the first game of the day.

Yeager's goal, set up by inserter Grace Schulze and stopper Talia Schenck, made it a 1-0 game after one quarter. By halftime, Princeton had outshot BC 5-0 and seemed to be in control, only to have BC make it a more even game after the break and then a "hang on every possession" game in the fourth. Princeton would manage only one shot in the final 30 minutes, while the Eagles had three shots and four penalty corners.Beth puts us up at the end of the first, assists to Grace and Talia.
