Princeton Falls To St. Joe's 1-0 In NCAA Quarters
November 17, 2024 | Field Hockey
The immediacy of the moment will fade over time. Eventually, all that will be left will be the pride in having given everything all season and having it extend all the way to second-to-last weekend possible.
Â
That was the message Princeton field hockey head coach Carla Tagliente gave to her team in its postgame huddle, after her Tigers fell 1-0 to St. Joe's in a highly tense, highly defensive, highly fierce NCAA quarterfinal game in front of an overflow crowd at Ellen Ryan Field. St. Joe's scored the only goal of the game on a penalty corner with 4:55 to play in the fourth quarter.
Â
Princeton finishes its season at 14-6 overall, including a 7-0 run to the Ivy League championship, the program's 28th. Princeton had defeated Boston College 1-0 in the opening round Friday.
Â
The game was played mostly between the circles, rather than inside them. Neither team had a shot in the first quarter or the second quarter, as the defenders dominated. Princeton finally had some third-quarter chances, only to have two penalty corner shots turned away.
Â
St. Joe's still didn't have a shot until it drew the corner in the fourth. After a first try by the Hawks resulted in a second corner, this time Celeste Smits redirected a feed into the cage.
Â
Princeton defenders Gracie McGowan, Ottilie Sykes and Clem Houlden went all 60 minutes against St. Joe's and BC. Beth Yeager and Ella Cashman also played all 120 minutes this weekend.
Â
The loss marked the end of the careers of six Princeton seniors: Clare Brennan, Aimee Jungfer, McGowan, Grace Schulze, Robyn Thompson and Lily Webb.
