Virginia Gets Past Princeton in NCAA Opener

An early second-half goal from Virginia's Maggie Cagle lifted the host Cavaliers to a 2-1 lead in Friday night's NCAA tournament opener in Charlottesville, and Virginia kept it there as the Princeton women's soccer team's Ivy League championship season came to an end.Â
Princeton opened the scoring with a Pietra Tordin goal five minutes into the game with Zoe Markesini and Heather MacNab fed it up the left side for Tordin to break ahead and chip it home for the early lead.Â

Less than 10 minutes later, Yuna McCormack, Tordin's teammate on the U.S. team at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in September, had the equalizer for Virginia, and the teams remained tied through the break until Cagle's goal less than three minutes after halftime.
Princeton, which outshot Virginia 10-6 overall and 4-2 on goal, finishes the season at 14-5 and having won its 11th Ivy League title and made its 16th trip to the NCAA tournament.
