Princeton Turns In Pair of Shutouts to Complete Opening-Weekend Sweep
February 25, 2024 | Softball
It took poring through the Princeton softball team's record books to find a start as auspicious as the one the Tigers turned in this weekend, completing it with a pair of shutouts, 8-0 in six innings against South Carolina State and 2-0 over Oakland.
Princeton is 4-0 for the first time since 2005, and the 29 runs the team scored over the season's first four games match the most that any Princeton team has scored over the first four, with the 1993 Tigers also scoring 29.
In Sunday's opener at host College of Charleston, Princeton got three first-inning runs on an RBI knock from Karis Ford and a two-run single from fellow rookie Sonia Zhang, and two innings later, a bases-loaded walk to Cate Bade, run-scoring singles from Lauren Sablone and Julia Dumais, and an RBI groundout by Lauren Pappert pushed the Tiger lead to 4-0. Sablone had another RBI single in the sixth for the final run to end it early.
In the circle, Meghan Harrington threw a four-hit, one-walk shutout as the junior struck out a career-high nine batters.
Against Oakland, Cassidy Shaw and Grizzlies counterpart Sydney Campbell threw dueling shutouts for the first four innings before Shaw extended hers through the fifth and Sablone kept Campbell from doing the same, hitting a two-run homer that brought home a walk to Abby Harrington for what turned out to be the game's only runs.
Shaw finished with a line of two hits and three walks allowed in 5 2/3 innings, striking out two. Molly Chambers stepped in to get the final out of the sixth and the first two of the seventh, setting down all three batters she faced, and Brielle Wright got a strikeout to end it and earn the save.
Sablone and Zhang each hit .455 on the weekend, each going 5 for 11. Sablone led the team by slugging 1.000 on the strength of the two homers, using those to drive in six of her eight RBI on the weekend. Ford hit .444 in her first collegiate weekend, going 4 for 9. Princeton hit .320 as a team with Allison Ha, Bade and Allie Goodwin each hitting .333.
Shaw and Harrington each went 2-0 on the weekend in the circle, each with a sub-1.00 ERA with Shaw at 0.70 and Harrington at 0.75.
The Tigers will look to extend the season-starting winning streak past four games for the first time in program history when they take on Bethune-Cookman on Friday at 10 a.m. to open UCF's Knights Classic in Orlando, Fla.
