No. 21 Women's Lacrosse Closes Spring Break Trip With 16-11 Win At Jacksonville
March 16, 2024 | Women's Lacrosse
No. 21 Princeton wrapped up its Spring Break trip to Florida on a winning note, dominating the middle two quarters en route to a 16-11 win at Jacksonville.
Â
The Tigers (4-3), outscored the Dolphins (2-6) in the second and third periods, 11-4, to turn a one-goal deficit into a seven-goal lead by the start of the fourth quarter. The Princeton lead would eventually balloon to nine before the Dolphins tacked on a few goals in the closing minutes.
Â
Four different players had hat tricks for the Tigers, with Kari Buonanno, Jami MacDonald, Nina Montes and Haven Dora each scoring three times. Dora added an assist for a four-point game to lead all scorers.
Â
Buonanno was a standout all day for the Tigers. Not only did she score her three goals on three shots, she added five ground balls, two caused turnovers and two draw controls.
Â
MacDonald also was a factor on the ride, causing a pair of turnovers and picking up two ground balls.
Â
Sophie Whiteway had four ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover while scoring once.
Â
Amelia Hughes made 10 saves on 21 shots – her most impressive period coming in the third quarter when she made four saves while allowing just two goals.
Â
The Tigers were held off the scoreboard themselves for the first 6:14 of the game, but limited the Dolphins to only two goals before McKenzie Blake scored on an extra-player opportunity. Kari Buonanno followed to tie the game with 3:51 remaining in the first quarter and Jami MacDonald gave the Tigers a 3-2 lead 1:21 later.
Â
Jacksonville countered with the next two to close the first and open the second quarters and take a 4-3 lead after a Jenna Peed goal 0:31 into the second frame.
Â
That would be the last time Jacksonville led in the game.
Â
The Tigers scored the next five goals, including two in 0:31 from Whiteway and Dora, to build an 8-4 lead with 4:32 remaining in the first half.
Â
It was more of the same to start the second half as Princeton put together a 5-1 sprint over the first 8:53 to take a 13-6 lead. Buoanno scored twice during that run, while goals from Montes and MacDonald 0:45 apart closed the run in style.
Â
In the fourth, MacDonald and then Montes scored to give the Tigers a 16-7 lead with 7:13 to play before both teams went to their benches to close out the remainder of the game.
Â
The Tigers return to Class of 1852 Stadium on March 23 to host Cornell on Alumnae Day at 12 p.m.
