No. 19 Women's Lacrosse Washes Away Cornell, 13-12
March 23, 2024 | Women's Lacrosse
No. 19 Princeton took down Cornell on rainy day at Class of 1952 Stadium, erasing an early deficit and halting every Big Red comeback attempt en route to a 13-12 win.
Â
The Tigers (5-3, 1-1 Ivy) Â were bolstered by a strong second quarter where they scored five times while allowing just one from the Big Red (5-3, 2-1 Ivy).
Â
Grace Tauckus had five goals for the Tigers, while Haven Dora (three assists) and Jami MacDonald (2 goals, 1 assist) had three-point games.
Â
McKenzie Blake had two goals and five draw controls, Abigail Roberts also had five draw controls.
Â
The Big Red jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the first 9:11 of the opening quarter, and led by a score of 4-1 after the end of the first period.
Â
The Tigers settled in once the second quarter began, putting together a 5-1 run in the stanza to lead, 6-5, at halftime.
Â
McKenzie Blake scored 0:15 into the second period, and after a Cornell goal 2:24 later gave the Big Red a 5-2 lead, Princeton would go on to score the final four goals of the half.
Â
Samantha DeVito cashed in a Kari Buonanno pass 4:09 into the second quarter to start the run, followed by Meg Morrisroe 2:34 later.
Â
Jami MacDonald would net the next two goals, first finishing off a Haven Dora pass with 6:12 remaining in the quarter and then working a solo move to goal 1:04 later to give Princeton its first lead of the game.
Â
The teams went back and forth over the majority of the third quarter, trading goals over the first 9:15 of the period before Blake and Grace Tauckus went back-to-back in a span of 3:28 to give the Tigers a two-goal lead for the first time in the game.
Â
Cornell would counter with two goals of its own before the end of the third period, scoring twice in the final minute to send the game to the fourth quarter tied at 10-10.
Â
Grace Tauckus opened the fourth quarter with a goal 0:47 in assisted by Kari Buonanno to give Princeton an 11-10 lead, but the Big Red answered once more with a Caitlin Slaminko goal with 9:39 to play.
Â
That would be the final time the game was tied, though, as the Tigers scored the next two – a free position goal from Tauckus and a snipe from Nina Montes – to take a 13-11 lead with 4:43 to play.
Â
Cornell would get within one via an Ellie Bergin extra player goal with 0:58 to play. The Big Red won the ensuing draw control, but a final shot attempt from Josie Vogel was blocked and Sam Whiting picked up the ground ball to salt away the victory.
