No. 25 Women's Basketball Clinches Sixth Straight Ivy League Title
March 09, 2024 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON – The No. 25 Princeton Women's Basketball Team held the Penn Quakers without a basket for almost the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter to earn a 72-55 victory at Jadwin Gym.
Â
The victory clinched the program's 18th overall Ivy League crown and sixth consecutive title.
Â
In front, 55-47, as the fourth quarter started, the Tigers ripped off 13 straight points, forcing a Penn timeout. The Quakers closed the gap to 13 with three minutes to go, but Skye Belker stole the ball and Madison St. Rose hit a mid-range bucket to stop the momentum.
Â
Penn never scored again. The road squad went 1-of-9 from the floor in the final 10 minutes.
Â
Ahead by one, 7-6, the Tigers finished off the first stanza on a 15-6 run to hold a 10-point lead, 22-12, as the second quarter began. Princeton shot an impressive 71.4 percent (10-of-14) during that stretch.
Â
The Quakers kept the game within single digits in the second frame and cut their deficit to two, 30-28, with 65 seconds to go. Kaitlyn Chen stole an errant pass and raced the length of the court for a bucket to set the contest at 32-28 at halftime.
Â
St. Rose and Chen combined for 21 points on 10-of-12 shooting in the first half.
Â
After Penn got within one, Princeton sprinted out with eight of 11 to force a timeout. Another seven-point spurt pushed the advantage back to 12 for the Tigers before they took an eight-point lead into the fourth.
Â
St. Rose led all scorers with 22 points on 9-of-17 shooting. Chen had her fourth career double-double with 19 points and a career-high 11 assists along with seven boards. Chet Nweke added 11 points and five rebounds in the win.
Â
Princeton is now 23-4 overall and finished the regular season at 13-1 in the Ivy League. If the Tigers finish with a higher NCAA Net Ranking than Columbia, they will be the No. 1 seed in next weekend's Ivy League Tournament.
