No. 2 Men's Lightweight Rowing Battles No. 3 Cornell For Platt Cup
April 11, 2024 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
PRINCETON - The No. 2 Princeton Men's Lightweight Rowing Team hosts the No. 3 Cornell Big Red for the Platt Cup on Lake Carnegie Saturday.
Cornell has won the last three Platt Cups and eight of the last 10 meetings against Princeton. The Big Red gave the 1V its only loss of the season in 2023.
"Cornell is always a big mid-season race for us," said Adam Casler. "We have not won the Platt Cup and Harriet Trophy since 2018 and this is not something we're taking lightly. There is a lot of anticipation and excitement around going head to head with a strong opponent on our home course on Saturday."
Head coach Marty Crotty's crew has wins over Navy (Murtaugh Cup), No. 6 Dartmouth (Diamond Challenge Cup) and No. 8 Columbia (Campbell Cup) this season.
In their last event, the Lions (6:42.0) got a win at 3V to begin the action over the Tigers (6:46.8). The 2V rebounded with a 6:21.8, 3.4 seconds in front of Columbia (6:25.3). The Campbell Cup race was decided by 6.5 seconds as the 1V crossed the line at 6:10.05.
In the afternoon, Princeton's 2V stretched its lead from 1.5 seconds with 500m to go to a 4.5-second victory over the Big Green. The 1V took home 6:05.7, 13.7 seconds ahead of Dartmouth to easily earn the Diamond Challenge Cup.
Last week, Casler and Nick Aronow were named to the IRCA Athlete Watchlist.
Casler and Aronow were on the 1V that lost just once all season in 2023. Last year, the 1V won Eastern Sprint and IRA gold for the first time since 2010. Princeton also won the IRA President's Cup for the sixth time in program history.
The duo was named IRCA First Team All-Americans and First Team All-Ivy.
