No. 30 Men's Tennis Gets Past No. 28 Cornell, 4-1
April 07, 2024 | Men's Tennis
PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 30 Princeton University men's tennis team successfully defended home court Sunday afternoon as it earned a 4-1 victory over No. 28 Cornell.
"This was a crucial win for us today," said Head Coach Billy Pate. "Not only do we keep ourselves in the hunt in the conference, but it really strengthens our position for post season. The entire team did a great job of rebounding after a tough outing at Columbia last week. Cornell had just beaten Columbia the week before, which further underscores how deep our league is becoming and how slim the margins are match to match. We had a great crowd that were energized and our players fed off that. I'm really proud of Paul for beating Papoe, one of the top players in the country, particularly after he lost to him in the fall. It was also important to have Landon and Ellis win tight second sets to put the pressure on Cornell and give Paul some confidence serving out the match at No 1. Now it's important for us to take the positives, and areas of improvement, from the weekend and prepare well for the last two weeks of conference play."
The Tigers won the doubles point after No. 31 Paul Inchauspe and Filippos Astreinidis took down Nathan Mao and Adit Sinja, 6-3, at No. 1 then the duo of Sebastian Sec and Alan Kam defeated Radu Papoe and Samuel Paquette at No. 3, 6-2.
Singles saw Fnu Nidunjianzan take down No. 61 Adit Sinha at No. 2, 6-2, 6-4, then Sebastian Sec overcome Petar Teodorovic, 7-6, 6-3. At No. 1, No. 13 Inchauspe saved two set points to outlast No. 13 Radu Papoe in an epic first set, 7-6. He was also up a break early in the second set, 2-0, but surrendered it then broke Papoe at 4-4 then proceeded to serve out the match, 6-4. Inchauspe's 7-6, 6-4 victory clinched the match for Princeton.
Landon Ardila also saved two set points as he went on to win the second set at No. 4 against Bradley Paliska.
