No. 1 Heavies Race At Eastern Sprints Sunday
May 17, 2024 | Heavyweight Rowing
PRINCETON – The No. 1 Princeton Men's Heavyweight Team will race on Lake Quinsigamond at Eastern Sprints this weekend.
Last season, the Tigers secured a silver in the first varsity at Sprints for the first time since 2016. The 2V also earned silver which led the team to finish tied for second in the Rowe Cup standings. Princeton would go on to finish fourth overall at IRAs as the 1V snagged a bronze medal.
Head coach Greg Hughes' squad medaled four straight years at Sprints from 2014-17, but have not earned consecutive silver medals since 2010-11. The last gold for the Tigers was in 2006.
2024 has already been one of the best seasons in program history as it's the first time ever that Princeton's 1V and 2V each went undefeated during the same season. The Tigers' 1V has had a perfect regular season just five times (1881, 1997, 1999, 2006) in the 152-year history of the program.
"We've been practicing executing over the last two weeks, continuing to build consistency in our performance as we gear up for Sprints," said Patrick Long. "Excitement has been building which has been really fun to be a part of and the whole team is really looking forward to racing and showing what we can do."
Last month, Tom George '18 and Oliver Wynne-Griffith won the Men's Pair gold at the European Rowing Championships. That duo also won the gold at the World Rowing Cup I in April.
Recently, Nick Mead '17 was named to the U.S. Rowing Olympic Team. He will race in either four or eight for the United States. He was recently named the 2023 US Rowing Athlete of the Year after helping the United States four to a silver medal at the 2023 World Rowing Championships, the best finish for a U.S. boat since 2017.
Fred Vystael '16 (Denmark 2-) and Jonas Juel '22 (Norway 4x) in the final Olympic Qualification Regatta starting on Sunday. If they finish in the top two, they will qualify for the Olympics this summer in Paris.
Next week, George (Great Britain 2-), Tim Masters '15 (Austrailai 4- ) and Mead (United States 4-) race in the World Rowing World Cup II in Lucerne, Switzerland.
