No. 32 Men's Tennis Falls Just Short To No. 40 VCU In NCAA Tournament First Round
May 03, 2024 | Men's Tennis
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 32 Princeton University men's tennis team battled valiantly but fell just short to No. 40 VCU, 4-2, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday afternoon at the Virginia Tennis Facility at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
"Credit to VCU they rallied hard from a deficit and swung the momentum late," said Head Coach Billy Pate. "I believe this is the first time this spring we didn't quite demonstrate the resiliency we've shown getting to this point. It's a bitter pill, but we will learn and grow from this successful season. We always go into any year with the goal of making the NCAA's while also advancing through the tournament. This team will be poised to do that and today won't detract from the positive growth we've had and the future success we expect. We will now look forward to Paul competing in the NCAA singles championships and hopefully he and Filippos can earn a spot in doubles from their current position on the alternate list."
The Tigers got off to a strong start, with the duo of Alan Kam and Sebastian Sec first taking down Mathis Bondaz and Romain Gales, 6-2, at No. 3 before No. 32 Paul Inchauspe and Filippos Astreinidis and Paul Inchauspe clinched the doubles point by outlasting No. 47 German Samofalov and Oscar Pinto Sansano, 6-4, at No. 1.
Singles saw Ellis Short take down Hamza El Amine at No. 5, 6-3, 6-1.
The NCAA Tournament appearance was the Tigers' second in the past three seasons and tenth in program history.
