Shaw, Wright Pitch Princeton to Ivy Tournament Final
May 09, 2024 | Softball
Brielle Wright threw a hitless 3 2/3 innings in relief of Cassidy Shaw, who gave up just two hits during her time in the circle, and the Princeton softball team finds itself in the final of the Ivy League Tournament, one win from advancing to the NCAAs after a 3-1 win over Harvard on Thursday at Princeton Softball Stadium at Strubing Field.
Princeton broke through in the third inning when Lauren Sablone slid a one-out single through and went to third on a two-base error. Julia Dumais then picked up Sablone with an infield hit to get Princeton on the board. Allie Goodwin followed with a single, Allison Ha moved both along with a sacrifice bunt, and after a Karis Ford base hit to left to pick up both Dumais and Goodwin, Princeton had all the scoring it needed with a 3-0 lead.
Harvard, the designated home team for the game, had a single and a walk to start its half of the fourth to help chase Shaw from the game with one out in the inning, and though an RBI groundout got Harvard on the board once Wright took over, Wright helped keep the score at 3-1Â with the help of a nice stop by Sonia Zhang at third base.
Â
From there, Wright and the Tiger defense allowed just a two-out error in the fifth, got a double play after a leadoff walk to help quell the Harvard sixth, and then Wright struck out two in the seventh and got a ground ball for the final out to end it.
With the win, Princeton will have an off day on Friday before returning for a noon start on Saturday against Harvard. The Crimson defeated Dartmouth on Friday to stay alive in the tournament after Dartmouth defeated Yale later Thursday to remain in the draw.
