The first day of the Henley Royal Regatta saw two Princeton boats row a combined 4,224 meters and not trail for even a centimeter at any point. That's not a bad way to start.
On a cool cloudy Tuesday outside of London, the two Princeton boats who are competing in the Temple Challenge Cup bolted from the start and never trailed, each rolling into the second round.
"It's always great to get through the first round here," said Princeton head coach Greg Hughes. "You get a feel for the course, and you can key in on a few simple adjustments for the next round."
At Henley, that next round gets here quickly. In fact, the winner will have win five head-to-head races between now and Sunday, so getting out to big leads in the early races may pay off down the line in terms of what's left in the tank.
Princeton's first boat was the "Princeton A," it's second varsity 8, which took on the Durham University B boat and went wire-to-wire, winning by a full length. Next up was the "Princeton B," its third varsity 8, which got off to an even faster start and pulled away quickly from Exeter University to win by two full lengths.
"Henley is a long event, with racing lasting up to six days," Hughes said. "And, there are no easy races. The goal is to be prepared to execute on the day and to have as much available for what may be coming next. The further a crew can make it, the bigger the races will become."
Princeton A will row Wednesday against Newcastle University, who edged Imperial College of London. Princeton B will row against the Durham A boat, who also had a close first round win, over Oxford Brooks D.
"The 3V had a great start to the regatta," said assistant coach Matt Smith. "For a boat that is comprised of freshman, sophomores and juniors it is exciting for them to get a win today and another chance tomorrow."
The schedule for the following day is always announced after all of the day's races are over.
The Princeton 1V will race in the Ladies' Challenge Cup beginning Friday.
