Yeager, USA Draw With Spain To Get First Olympic Point
July 29, 2024 | Field Hockey
In a group where every point in the final standings will be huge, the United States Olympic field hockey team picked up its first Monday in Paris.
The U.S. played to a 1-1 draw against Spain in its second game of these Olympic Games, after a 4-1 loss to Argentina in its opener Saturday. Beth Yeager, who will be a Princeton junior this fall, has started both games for the American team.
The Americans scored first against Spain, 12 minutes into the game, on a beautiful counterattack after a defensive save kept it scoreless. The Spanish tied it before the half, and the U.S. had a disallowed goal when replay clearly showed the ball touched an American foot prior to the shot.
The United States plays Wednesday (7:15 am Eastern) against Australia before finishing the Group play with games against Great Britain and South Africa. The top four teams in each of the two groups will advance to the quarterfinals, and the Americans are currently fourth, ahead of Great Britain and South Africa, who are both 0-2-0. Argentina and Australia are both 2-0-0 for six points, while Spain has a win and tie for four points.
