The maximum number of boats in any one of the 26 divisions at the Henley Royal Regatta is 32. In the first two days of racing, those divisions — including the Temple Challenge Cup — have been whittled down to just eight remaining contenders.
The reward? A precious day off. If you are an American crew, like, say, the Princeton University second varsity 8, that day off just happens to be on the Fourth of July.
The Princeton 2V, racing as "Princeton A" in the Temple Cup, won its second straight race at Henley, powering past Newcastle University by nearly two lengths Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinal round. In doing so, Princeton has a well-earned 48-hour break before its next race.
Next up for the Tigers will be ASR Nereus, who knocked off fellow Dutch crew GSR Aegir by four lengths in its second race. Comparative times mean little in these rounds, though Princeton's time Wednesday was 13 seconds faster than ASR Nereus.
The Princeton 3V, which is made up completely of underclassmen, won its first race Tuesday before falling Wednesday morning to Durham University's powerful A boat in its second time on the water.
"I was pleased with the way that both boats raced today," said Princeton head coach Greg Hughes. "Our 3V was definitely punching above its weight today going up against the top boat from Durham and put up a great fight against a very strong crew. Our 2V rowed a solid race against Newcastle, and I'm very excited to see them race in the quarter finals on Friday."
The Princeton first varsity boat races for the first time Friday in the Ladies' Challenge Plate, the top level for college crews at Henley, just below the national team divisions.
Race times will be announced Thursday for both Princeton boats.
