The Fourth of July was a day off for the Princeton heavyweight rowers at the Henley Royal Regatta. The Fifth of July brought its own fireworks for the Tigers.
Princeton had two boats row Friday at Henley, and both won their races to advance to Saturday's semifinal rounds. This is now the second straight year, and 30th and 31st time overall, that Princeton has had boats reach the semifinal round at the world's oldest regatta.
The day started when the second varsity 8 rowed for the third time in the Temple Challenge Cup, taking on the Dutch crew ASR Nereus in the quarterfinal round. As with its first two races, Princeton went wire-to-wire, winning by two lengths.
The Temple Cup started with 32 boats, and now only four remain. Princeton will take on Oxford Brookes B in Saturday's semifinal round, with the winner to race Sunday for the championship.
While the 2V has been racing since Tuesday, the first varsity 8 made its Henley debut as one of six boats in the Ladies' Challenge Plate, the highest level below the national team competition. Princeton took on the local Thames Rowing Club and bolted away from the start, never trailing and holding off a late charge to win by a half-length.
The win advances Princeton into the semifinals against the Thames RC & Tidewater Sculling School.
Princeton last had multiple semifinalists at Henley in 1985. The only other times before that were in 1934 and 1949.
