Nick Mead is an Olympic Champion!
The United States led throughout the final of the men's four in Paris, but the battle was close the entire length of the course as New Zealand was bow-to-bow with the Americans over the 2000 meters in a world-class race worthy of the stage.
Mead and his crew had one final push over the last 200 meters, edging out the Kiwis at the line by 0.85 seconds with a winning mark of 5:49.03 to secure the first gold medal in the men's four for the United States in 64 years.
Great Britain was third to secure bronze in a time of 5:52.42.
The gold medal is the 35th for a Princetonian at an Olympic Games -- and second in 24 hours as Hannah Scott '21 win gold for Great Britain in the women's quad sculls the day prior. Mead is the first Princeton men's rower to win an Olympic gold medal since Chris Ahrens won gold in the eight with the U.S. in 2004 and he is the third Princeton men's rower overall to win a gold medal with Mike Evans (Canada men's eight, 1984) the other.
"This was an amazing piece of rowing from Nick and his teammates," said Princeton head coach Greg Hughes. "They set the pace in the race and executed their race plan so well. What a day for Nick and his family and everyone who has supported him along the way. All of us at the Princeton Boathouse are so proud of him and everyone who was racing today, including another alum, Tim Masters, who had a great showing all week in this event with Australia. To have two Tigers in the same Olympic Final was special, and we can't wait to celebrate with everyone after the Olympics."
Masters and Australia were sixth in the Olympic Final for Australia as he completed his second Olympic Games.
