August 05, 2024 | Men's Track and Field
In his second Olympic Games and his first Olympic final, Sondre Guttormsen '23 finished eighth in the men's pole vault competition on Monday at the Stade de France in Paris.
Guttormsen cleared 5.5 meters on his first try, 5.7 on his third, and then 5.8 on his first, equaling his season-best height. Guttormsen then spread his three attempts over three heights, at 5.85, 5.9 and 5.95 meters, but didn't clear the bar, ending his competition.
The gold medal went to Sweden's Mondo Duplantis, who topped out at a world-record 6.25 meters. USA's Sam Kendricks won the silver, topping out at 5.95, and Greece's Emmanouil Karalis, whose top height cleared was 5.9, won the bronze.
At Princeton, Guttormsen was a three-time NCAA pole vault champion, including once outdoors. It was Guttormsen's second trip to the Games, with an injury felling him during qualification at the Tokyo Games.Â
