Kelley, Ittycheria Lead Tigers to First 2024 Win at St. John’s
September 10, 2024 | Men's Soccer
QUEENS, N.Y. – After scoring the first two goals of the match, the Princeton men's soccer team captured its first win of the season on Tuesday on the road at St. John's. The intense, physical battle took place at Belson Stadium in Queens, N.Y., with Daniel Ittycheria scoring the game-winner and Kevin Kelley recording a goal and an assist as well.
With the win, Princeton improves to 1-2-0 on the season, while St. John's falls to 2-2-2.
"I'm super proud of the effort from the team today. St. John's is a tough place to play, and they're a good team. We shot ourselves in the foot a bit by letting them back into the game, but then we followed through and locked them out. We didn't do everything right, but the grit and the determination was there the whole time. It's great to see that the first two losses didn't just beat us down, we took what we needed to from those games and we improved. The guys really battled, and they deserved this win tonight." - Head Coach Jim Barlow
HOW IT HAPPENED
St. John's came out with energy early, forcing a Khamari Hadaway save just three minutes into the match.
However, as the Tigers settled into the game, they put the pressure on with a 45-yard run by Ittycheria and a dangerous corner by Jack Jasinski in the 14th minute that landed in the hands of St. John's keeper Alec McLachlan.
In the 19th minute, sophomore Kelley picked up a loose ball just past midfield, ran to the outside of the box and sent a confident shot straight into the upper left corner of the goal, getting the Tigers on the board first.
Just 10 minutes later, a give and go between Kelley and Ittycheria got the ball into the left of the box, where Ittycheria rocketed the ball into the net with a first touch finish.
A St. John's free kick just outside the box in the 39th minute allowed the Red Storm's Dechlyn Hauge to tap the ball into the net, bringing the score to 2-1 Tigers going into halftime.
Coming out of the half, Princeton went looking for another goal with a shot on target by Will Francis in the 52nd minute, saved by McLachlan, followed by another blocked shot from Kelley seconds later.
The momentum shifted quickly to the other end of the field, though, as St. John forced a Hadaway save and took another free kick just outside the box, this time cleared away by the Tiger defense.
In an end to end battle, Francis registered another shot on goal for the Tigers, forcing McLachlan's hand again.
The Red Storm continued to press the Tigers, sending a ball just above the crossbar twice in the 83rd and 87th minutes. Still, the Tiger defense was able to keep St. John's from adding another goal.
With just 11.9 seconds remaining, St. John's got another free kick inches away from the box. The ball was sent in and promptly headed away by Gabriel Duchovny, letting the clock run out so the Tigers would take the win, 2-1.
