Tigers Take First Home Win Over Colgate 3-1
September 17, 2024 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. – Three Tigers scored to give the Princeton men's soccer team a 3-1 victory over Colgate on Tuesday night in Roberts Stadium. Daniel Ittycheria and Kevin Kelley each recorded their second goal in two games, while Will Francis notched his first of the season.
With the win, Princeton improves to 2-2-0 on the season while Colgate falls to 3-3-1.
"Tonight was another good effort and a good building block as we keep moving forward. We didn't have the start to the second half that we hoped for, and Colgate got into the game, but we locked it down after and were able to get a win against a solid team. We learned some things today, got better, and did it by getting three points at home." - Head Coach Jim Barlow
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tigers came out strong, registering two corners and a shot on goal in the first 10 minutes of action as junior Ittycheria made two dangerous runs into the box.
In the 19th minute, Princeton got a free kick deep in the attacking third. Jack Jasinski served the ball into a crowded box where Dash Papez headed it down to the foot of Francis, who found the back of the net.
Taking no pause in momentum as the half continued, Ian Nunez and Harry Roberts each got around players in red to produce chances, including a shot by Liam Beckwith that went soaring just inches above the crossbar. Still, the 1-0 score stood at the half.
Just six minutes into the second half, Colgate found an equalizer in Alejandro Coury who was sent a through-ball by Wade Johnson.
Two minutes later, a second yellow card to Cooper Cardenas forced the Raiders to continue the match with 10 men.
Princeton intensified its search for a second goal, and again Ittycheria found himself taken down in the box, a play which resulted in a Tiger penalty kick in the 54th minute.
Ittycheria's shot deflected off the hands of Colgate keeper Eric Widrick, but sophomore Kelley was there to collect the rebound and promptly fire it into the far corner of the goal, giving the Tigers the lead again.
The Tigers kept up the offensive pressure, and in the 58th minute, key passes from Bardia Hormozi and Roka Tsunehara allowed Ittycheria to send the ball into the lower right corner of the net for a third Tiger goal.
Princeton remained all offense, taking five corner kicks and registering 13 shots in the second half while keeping Colgate locked out of the match. Despite more close chances as the clock ran down, the 3-1 score stood final to deliver the Tigers their first home win of the season.
