Women’s Volleyball To Open 2024 Season At Villanova Tournament

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team will open the 2024 season at the Villanova Tournament inside the Jake Nevin Field House with three matches on Sept. 6 – 7.
The Tigers will first take on Old Dominion at 4:30 p.m. ET on Sept. 6 before facing Loyola Maryland at 11 a.m. ET and Villanova at 7 p.m. ET on Sept. 7.
2023 Rewind
Princeton is coming off a 2023 season where it finished second in the Ivy League, making the Ivy Tournament for the second-straight season in the tournament's second season of existence. The Tigers had a 14-9 record overall and an 11-3 record in conference play in 2023.
Head Coach Sabrina King
The Tigers will be led by Sabrina King, who enters her 13th season as head coach. She has guided Princeton to five Ivy League titles, three NCAA Tournament appearances and has been named Ivy Coach of the Year three times. Throughout her tenure as head coach, King has coached four Ivy League Players of the Year and 44 All-Ivy honorees. King is currently sitting on 193 career victories, requiring seven more to reach 200. A member of the Class of 2001 at Princeton, she won three Ivy titles as a player, was the 1999 Ivy Player of the Year and was a three-time All-Ivy selection.
Scalamandre Poised For Dominant 2024
Through just two seasons at Princeton, junior Lucia Scalamandre has accumulated an impressive list of accolades. She was named 2023 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Region Honorable Mention and is a two-time First Team All-Ivy honoree. In 2023, Scalamandre led the Ivy League in hitting percentage (.408) and was ranked fifth in points-per-set (3.45). The 2022 Ivy Rookie of the Year, her 104 blocks from the 2022 season rank No. 4 all-time in school history for most blocks in a season.
The 2023 Ivy Rookie of the Year
Sophomore Sydney Draper was named 2023 Ivy Rookie of the Year and Second-Team All-Ivy League. Her 903 assists led the conference, while she ranked second in the Ivy League and 46th in the nation in assists-per-set (10.26). Draper's 24 service aces also tied the team high.
An Impressive 2023 For Chaney
Sophomore Kamryn Chaney will look to build off an impressive 2023 season that saw her named Second Team All-Ivy League. Chaney led the team and ranked second in the Ivy League in points-per-set (3.86), led the team and ranked fourth in the conference in kills-per-set (3.27) and led the team and was 10th in the Ivy League in service aces per set (0.22).
Bold's Defensive Impact
As a freshman in 2023, Sydney Bold led the Tigers and ranked second in the Ivy League in digs (375) while also leading the team and ranking fourth in the conference in digs-per-set (4.26).
Ivy League Hitting Percentage Leader
Senior Mariah Haislip has recorded some of the best hitting percentages in the Ivy League over the past two seasons. As a sophomore in 2022 she led the conference (.379), and she ranked fourth in 2023 (.357).
Returning Group
Rounding out a strong group of returners are seniors Gracie Wood and Shelby Fulton, juniors Ella Bunde and Valerie Nutakor along with sophomores Erin McNair and Ava Harrington.
Leadership Council
The Tigers' leadership council for 2024 consists of Haislip, Wood, Nutakor and Draper.
The Newcomers
The Princeton women's volleyball class of 2028 consists of Sylvia Bunde (sister of Ella Bunde), Asthyn Sims, Ashley Duckworth, Jackie Onyechi and Nicki Gaito.
Scouting ODU
The Monarchs are 2-1 in 2024, most recently falling 3-0 (26-24, 26-24, 25-19) to Virginia in Norfolk, Virginia, on Aug. 31. In 2023, ODU went 14-17 overall and 6-10 in Sun Belt play.
Scouting Loyola
Loyola has a 1-2 record on the season, dropping a 3-1 (25-9, 23-25, 25-16, 25-20) contest in Wilmington, North Carolina, to East Carolina in its most recent match on Aug. 31. Prior to facing the Tigers, the Greyhounds take on Villanova on Sept. 6. Loyola was 11-16 overall and 6-10 in Patriot League matches in 2023.
Scouting Villanova
The Wildcats are 0-2 in 2024, suffering a 3-0 (25-6, 25-19, 25-22) setback against Notre Dame in their most recent match on Aug. 31 in Santa Clara, Calif. Villanova is coming off a 2023 campaign where it went 17-14 overall and 8-10 in Big East play. The Wildcats and Tigers most recently met on Sept. 17, 2021, in what was a 3-0 (25-12, 25-21, 25-20) Princeton victory.
