Tigers Drop Home Opener to UNH, 3-2
September 06, 2024 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON – The Princeton men's soccer team dropped its home opener to the University of New Hampshire (UNH), 3-2, on Friday evening.
With the loss, Princeton falls to 0-2-0 on the season and UNH improves to 2-1-1.
The Tigers came out with energy, fighting for a goal early on. The Tigers' first chance looked to be a header from Giuliano Fravolini Whitchurch, but it found the hands of the UNH keeper. Keeping the momentum up, the game got more physical as both sides battled to find the back of the net.
A UNH challenge in the box on Daniel Ittycheria resulted in a Princeton penalty kick in the 35th minute. Senior captain Harry Roberts took the kick, sending the rebounded ball into the back of the net.
Another penalty kick came just six minutes later, with Wildcat Ibrahim Conde burying the ball to bring the score to 1-1 going into halftime.
Princeton again looked dangerous coming out of the half as Daniel Ittycheria took two shots on goal that forced a goalkeeper and a team save by New Hampshire just minutes in.
Building off of that momentum, a collision in the box led to another Tiger penalty kick, this time taken by Ittycheria, who confidently buried the ball in the top right of the goal giving Princeton back the lead.
It looked like Ittycheria would tack on another in the 60th minute as he slotted the ball into the lower right corner of the goal, but the play was overruled due to his collision with UNH goalkeeper Erik Lauta.
In the 62nd minute, New Hampshire's Michael Tsicoulias added another to bring the score to 2-2.
With less than four minutes remaining in the match, the Wildcats got a dangerous free kick just outside the box, allowing for a header by Matthew Goncalves to get past Tiger keeper Khamari Hadaway. The goal allowed New Hampshire to take the victory 3-2.
