Going to the Pros: Tordin Signs With NWSL's Portland Thorns
January 08, 2025 | Women's Soccer
Pietra Tordin, among the top 10 players in program history in goals and points for her career, has signed a contract to play with the Portland Thorns of the NWSL.
The move ends Tordin's Princeton career after three seasons with the program that saw the Tigers make two NCAA tournaments, advance to the second round in 2023, and complete the Ivy League double in 2024, winning both the league and league tournament titles.
In just three seasons with the program, Tordin amassed 71 points on 30 goals and 11 assists in 45 games, good for ninth on the program's career points list and seventh on the goals list. Tordin shares the program record for goals (four) and points (eight) in a single game after scoring four goals against Army West Point on Sept. 2, 2023.
"For the past three years, Pietra has displayed her prolific attacking qualities on the field and has been a massive contributor to many spectacular moments for our team," Princeton head coach Sean Driscoll said. "Our staff has really enjoyed watching her ascension from club to college to U-20 USYNT and now to the NWSL. While we will miss Pietra's personality both on and off the field, we are incredibly proud of her and grateful that she has earned a fantastic opportunity with Portland Thorns. Very few people get to achieve their dream of pursuing their respective sport at the professional level and she has done just that. Furthermore, she gets to begin her career in one of the most incredible environments the league has to offer, Providence Park. Portland's tremendous fanbase will soon be introduced to a player that boasts talent and passion in equal measure."
Tordin piled up the accolades during her Tiger career, earning the 2024 Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year award, the 2022 Ivy League Rookie of the Year award, and three All-Ivy League honors, including second-team recognition in 2022 and first-team honors in 2023 and 2024. She was a United Soccer Coaches third-team All-American in 2023 and a three-time all-region honoree by the organization, on the third team in 2022, second team in 2023 and first team in 2024.Â
Tordin began to draw international notice toward the end of 2023, attending camps with Brazil's U-20 team before getting a call from Team USA's U-20 squad, going on to make the U.S. team for the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. At the event in Colombia, Tordin helped the Americans to a third-place finish, playing in all seven games, starting five, and scoring four goals, including a hat trick in the group-stage finale against Paraguay. The hat trick was the first for a Team USA player at the FIFA U-20s since 2018 and the four goals were the most for a Team USA player at a FIFA U-20 tournament since 2012.
Tordin will be the sixth Tiger to play in the NWSL since the league began in 2013. There were two Princetonians in the NWSL in 2024, with Tyler Lussi '17 in North Carolina and Madison Curry '24 at Angel City in Los Angeles. Tordin will be the second Tiger to play for the Thorns, with Lussi having started her pro career there and continuing in the Rose City through the 2021 season.Â
