March 01, 2025 | Baseball
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- The Princeton University baseball team was set for a rematch with the Maryland Terrapins at David F. Couch Ballpark.
The Tigers jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Jake Koonin started with a leadoff walk before a Caden Shapiro single allowed Koonin to advance to third. Jake Bold slapped a base hit to bring Koonin across home plate.
The Terrapins answered in the next frame on an unearned run to tie things up at one a piece.
Maryland then continued to up the pressure by adding two runs in the third on back-to-back singles.
Kevin Blowers knocked his third double of the season and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch to cut Maryland's lead to one.
A three-run fourth for the Terrapins would inflate their lead to 6-2.
Nick Shenefelt came in for relief for Princeton starter Andrew D'Alession who ended his outing after four innings pitched with five earned runs on seven hits.
Bold brought Koonin home yet again in the bottom of the fifth before Shenefelt kept the Terrapins from scoring through the sixth. Elliott Eaton then climbed the mound for a quick 1-2-3 inning in the seventh.
Maryland's Eddie Hacopian hit a solo home run to left field to make up the difference in the eighth and started a wave of four runs added to the score to make it 10-3.
Dylan Zdunek doubled to left and allowed Bold to score in the bottom of the inning before Princeton attempted to rally back in the bottom of the ninth. Tommy Googins knocked his first career home run on a full count.
Although Kevin Blowers struck out, he hustled to first on a wild pitch to give the Tigers a base runner. Koonin registered his second walk of the day as Shapiro found his second base hit of the day, an RBI single to score Blowers.
Bold's groundout moved the two runners into scoring position and Zdunek's single brought home another Princeton run before the Terrapins switched pitchers to finish out the game and cut the Tigers' comeback just short with a 10-7 final.
A 3-for-4 night at the plate with three RBI for Bold and three runs for Koonin highlighted the Princeton offense.
Princeton will finish off the weekend with a Sunday morning matchup against the No. 12 Wake Forest Demon Deacons. First pitch is set for 9:30 AM.
