Softball Team Sweeps Sunday at Cornell, Aims for Series Sweep Monday
April 13, 2025 | Softball
Putting up 19 runs across 12 innings, the Princeton softball team took both games from Cornell on Sunday in Ithaca, 7-2 and 12-2 in five, and will look to complete the series sweep on Monday in an 11:30 a.m. start.Â
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ (international feed here) with live scoring available here.
At 10-1 in the Ivy, Princeton's lead in the league stands at 2 1/2 games over Dartmouth, which was able to complete its series at Penn on Sunday to move to 8-4 in the league. The Tigers can expand that lead to three games with a win on Monday. Columbia (7-4), Harvard (6-4), Brown (6-5) and Yale (6-7) are next in the race for the top four spots and a bid in the Ivy League Tournament, which the top seed will host. Brown is at Columbia to finish its series on Monday, and Yale will be at Harvard for two on Tuesday as the league gets this weekend's games in around Saturday's weather.
Princeton opened the scoring in the first inning when Karis Ford doubled to follow a two-bagger from Julia Dumais, and the Tiger lead stayed at 1-0 until the fourth. An error, a Jessica Phelps base hit and Abby Hornberger being hit by a pitch loaded the bases for Sonia Zhang, who hit a grand slam to expand the lead to 5-0 two batters before another error and another Ford double made it 6-0.
Meanwhile, Brielle Wright allowed just three hits and a walk over the first five innings as Princeton tacked on another run in the sixth, using a Zhang HBP and a Ford hit to put two on for Allison Ha, who had a sacrifice fly to pick up Zhang to make it 7-0.Â
Cornell chased Wright from the game in the sixth after a hit and two walks, but Keala Hollenkamp entered and got a pop-up and a fielder's choice to keep it 7-0 into the seventh. Three hits and a walk in the bottom of hte seventh added to two runs for the Big Red to spoil the shutout, but the Tigers finished the 7-2 first-game win. Wright finished with four hits and three walks allowed in 5 1/3 shutout innings, striking out five.
Game two saw Princeton jump ahead early again, this time with four first-inning runs as the Tigers had three hits, a hit batter and a walk in the inning with Ha on a fielder's choice, Phelps on a groundout, Allie Goodwin with a base hit and Lauren Sablone on a triple driving in runs.
Hits for Graciela Dominguez and Zhang before a walk to Dumais loaded the bases for a Ford sacrifice fly to make it 5-0 in the second before a four-run fourth grew the lead. Dominguez singled and Zhang reached on an unsuccessful fielder's choice before Ford drove in two runs with a hit, and after a Phelps hit, Goodwin reached on an error that allowed a run to score, and Sablone added an RBI single to make it 9-0.
A walk to Dominguez and a Dumais hit put runners on, and both scored on an error off the bat of Abby Hornberger to make it 11-0 in the fifth, and a Ha sacrifice fly pushed the final Tiger run across to make it 12-0.Â
Tiger starter Cassidy Shaw took a shutout into the fifth, but three hits, a walk and a pair of groundouts pushed two runs across to avoid the shutout. Shaw finished with the two runs allowed on six hits and a walk, striking out four.
