April 14, 2025 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON – Kaitlyn Chen '24 was selected by the Golden State Valkyries in the third round of the WNBA Draft tonight.
The former Tiger was selected 30th overall. She becomes the ninth Ivy League player overall and four Princeton alumnae (Abby Meyers, Bella Alarie and Leslie Robinson) to be picked in the WNBA draft. Harvard's Harmoni Turner became the 10th Ivy player selected at No. 35 by the Las Vegas Aces.
"I'm absolutely thrilled that the Valkyries drafted Kaitlyn tonight," said Princeton head coach Carla Berube. "The Valkyries are getting a relentless worker, a gritty defender, a versatile playmaker and an amazing teammate. I know Kaitlyn is prepared for the next level. The combination of her Princeton and UConn experiences have well equipped her to play in the W. Congrats Kaitlyn!"
Chen is coming off her graduate season with the Connecticut Huskies who won the National Championship. She started all 40 games for the Huskies and finished her season with 6.9 points, 3.4 assists and 1.8 rebounds per game. Her signature moment came in the Elite Eight against USC where she produced 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting.
She joined Berube as UConn National Champions as the Tigers' coach was on the program's first national title squad in 1995.
A three-time Ivy League Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Chen was the gold standard during the best stretch in Princeton Women's Basketball history.
In just three playing seasons, Chen led the Tigers to three Ivy League titles, three Ivy League Tournament crowns and three NCAA Tournament appearances. The former captain helped the Tigers become the first Ivy League women's team to win NCAA Tournament games in back-to-back seasons.
The two-time unanimous First-Team All-Ivy selection and 2023 Ivy Player of the Year has amassed a 74-16 mark during her time at Princeton, including three Top-25 victories. The true definition of a student-athlete, Chen was named a College Sports Communicators Second Team Academic All-American as a senior, the program's first since 2016, after finishing her Tiger career with 1,276 points and 359 assists.
The Valkyries begin their first season in the WNBA on Friday, May 16th vs, the Los Angeles Sparks.
