Heroics From Markovits Lead No. 34 Men’s Tennis Past No. 14 Harvard
April 05, 2025 | Men's Tennis
PRINCETON, N.J.- The Princeton men's tennis team and the Harvard Crimson have already met once this season. That first meeting was the ECAC Championship match where Harvard took a 4-2 decision. The second contest between the two came on Saturday afternoon in an Ivy League matchup and once again came down to the wire.
With everything on the line, freshman Milan Markovits clinched the match for the Tigers on court six as Princeton battled to a 4-3 victory over the No. 14 Crimson.
The Tigers secured the doubles point thanks to wins from Fnu Nidunjianzan and Ellis Short on court two along with Landon Ardila and Aleksandar Mitric on three.
Ardila picked up a quick singles victory to get things moving with the win coming in straight sets.
Harvard got its first point on the top court but Paul Inchauspe earned a ranked victory over Benjamin Privara 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 to put Princeton just one match away from clinching the win.
The Crimson battled back and set the score to 3-3 as everyone turned their focus to court six. After dropping the first set 6-7 (2), Markovits won the next two by scores of 6-4, 6-4 to close the door on Harvard.
"This was a tremendous win in front of a great home crowd," head coach Billy Pate said. "It was a great college tennis match and we've certainly had our share of 4-3 matches we've both won and lost. Our guys really wanted this one as I know they felt they missed some opportunities against Harvard at the ECAC Championships and against a few other top 20 ranked teams. Though we won the doubles, I didn't feel like we took control of the match and there were multiple momentum changes. It was an incredible effort from Milan, a freshman, to lock down the win. What a great moment for him as I know this will only propel him to greater heights during his career here. We'll enjoy this for a brief time and get ready for Dartmouth tomorrow."
