Softball Rallies Past Harvard, Keeps Ivy Tourney Run Going
May 09, 2025 | Softball
A five-run sixth inning, highlighted by a Karis Ford two-run go-ahead double and a three-run homer from Sonia Zhang, pushed the Princeton softball team past Harvard 5-1 on Friday night at Cynthia Lynn Paul '94 Field as the Tigers kept their Ivy League Tournament run going.
Princeton will take on Columbia in a 1 p.m. game Saturday back at Cynthia Paul Field. The winner will turn right around to face Brown needing a win to force the if-necessary game, which would take place on Sunday at 10 a.m.
In its bid to keep its season going, Harvard had a runner on in every inning except the sixth, but the Tigers held defensively in every inning but the third, when a Sophie Sun single followed a Finley Payne one-out double to get the Crimson on the board.Â
Against Harvard's Nicollette Hunter, who came within one strike of a no-hitter on Thursday against Columbia before seeing a one-run lead slip away, Princeton managed a first-inning Julia Dumais walk, a Dumais third-inning double, and a Zhang fourth-inning single through the first five innings.
Then came the sixth. Dumais got it going with a leadoff hit-by-pitch. Braeden Hale followed with a single, putting two on for Ford's double to find its way down the right-field line, scoring both to put Princeton in front. Still with nobody out, Allison Ha singled, putting two on for Zhang's three-run homer to rocket over the left-field fence, giving Princeton a five-run lead from the first batter to face reliever Ryan Grace before the Crimson held the Tigers there.
Harvard had one last push. Against Brielle Wright, who entered in the fourth inning for starter Cassidy Shaw, the Crimson started the seventh inning with three straight singles to load the bases, but Wright got three straight strikeouts to quell the threat and move Princeton on to Saturday's game against the Lions.
Shaw finished with a run allowed on four hits and two walks with a strikeout in 3 1/3 innings before Wright tossed 3 2/3 shutout innings, striking out six with three hits and two walks allowed.
