Tigers Draw Rutgers in Season Opener
August 22, 2025 | Women's Soccer
Zoe Markesini's 75th-minute goal, the first of her career, gave the Princeton women's soccer team a lead less than five minutes before Rutgers put away a penalty kick to tie it, and a 1-1 draw was how it ended on Friday night in the 2025 season opener at Roberts Stadium.
Princeton (0-0-1) outshot the Scarlet Knights (2-0-1) 21-7 overall and 9-4 on goal with 10 Tigers contributing to the overall shot total. Kayla Wong led Princeton in both, with four shots overall and three on goal. Markesini and rookie Nina Cantor had two shots on goal apiece.
Along with Cantor, backliner Anna Chau started in her first collegiate game from the Class of 2029, and Madison Recupero and Aubrey Crisostomo made their collegiate debut off the bench.
Junior Cecilia Cerone, making her third collegiate start between the posts, had three saves.
Markesini's goal came off a Drew Coomans corner kick, with Markesini bodying the ball down just inside the 18, and Brooke Dawahare corralled it and sent it back to Markesini for the finish as the junior backliner threaded the ball inside the left post, between a diving keeper Olivia Bodmer and Rutgers' Ashley Baran guarding the post.
Four minutes and 23 seconds later, after Rutgers' Emma Johns was tripped up near the penalty spot, Kennedi Cotter tucked the PK inside the right post as Cerone dove toward the left post, tying the game. It was the second penalty try of the night, with Bodmer making a dive to stop a Kayla Wong PK ticketed for just inside the left post with 24:35 remaining in the game.
Princeton will head to Loyola (Md.) on Sunday before returning to Roberts Stadium to take on Ohio State, ranked No. 25 in this week's United Soccer Coaches poll.
