Markesini Scores Season's Second Goal as Loyola Defeats Tigers
August 24, 2025 | Women's Soccer
Junior backliner Zoe Markesini scored her second career goal a game after scoring her first, but the Princeton women's soccer team fell at Loyola (Md.) 2-1 on Sunday night in Baltimore despite a lopsided shot total that favored the Tigers.
Princeton (0-1-1) outshot Loyola (3-0-1) 24-4 overall and 9-3 on goal, but two of the three shots on goal for the Greyhounds found the net. With seven minutes left before halftime, Loyola intercepted a Princeton clearing attempt just ahead of the midfield stripe and worked it back toward the Princeton goal, centering the ball for a finish from Anais Stephen to put the Greyhounds up 1-0.
It stayed there until almost 20 minutes into the second half. From about 30 yards out on a play that began with a Tiger throw-in deep in Loyola's end, Markesini got in front of a Loyola clearing try and rocketed a shot under the crossbar to tie the game.
The tie lasted just 82 seconds before Loyola re-took the lead. Princeton tried to clear a Loyola corner kick, but the Greyhounds kept it in Princeton's defensive half until Francesca Khachatourians got behind the Tiger back line and chipped it past keeper Sydney Romano after Romano came off the line to try and cut down the threat.
Romano, a sophomore, made her collegiate debut, playing the second half in relief of junior Cecilia Cerone. Romano made one save while seeing two of Loyola's three shots on goal.
Princeton will return home for a two-match weekend that begins Thursday night with a visit from Ohio State. The Buckeyes (1-1-1) were No. 25 in the United Soccer Coaches national ranking last week with a new poll coming out on Tuesday. Syracuse will follow with a visit on Sunday morning. The Orange are 3-1 with a trip to Quinnipiac set for Thursday.
