Cashman's OT Goal GIves No. 11 Princeton A 1-0 Win Over No. 18 Rutgers
September 14, 2025 | Field Hockey
Same script. Different ending. For the Princeton field hockey team, it was a much happier one.
Ella Cashman redirected Beth Yeager's drag flick on a penalty corner late in the first overtime period for the only goal of the day, as No. 11 Princeton knocked off No. 18 Rutgers 1-0 in Piscataway. It marked the sixth straight time that the visiting team has won in this series.
The game came two days after Princeton battled No. 5 Syracuse through 60 scorless minutes, only to lose 1-0 in OT when a penalty corner was upgraded to a stroke. It also, for that matter, came two days after Rutgers won in overtime, 3-2 over No. 16 UConn.
Princeton goalie Olivia Caponiti didn't have to do as much, but when it's scoreless for 60 minutes, anything a goalie does is huge. The junior got her first career shutout with three saves, including one on a high drive off a penalty corner in the first quarter and then again on a low shot early in the OT.
Caponiti got plenty of help from her defense, especially Cashman, Clem Houlden Ottilie Sykes and Gabriella Anderson, who logged huge minutes on the roasting field. Princeton also got big contributions from players like Lydia Bills, Molly Nye, and Helena Große, who got extended minutes off the bench because of the heat.
Neither team forced anything in the OT, and Rutgers had the first shot, which Caponiti steered away. Princeton was finally able to draw a corner at the other end, and Yeager sent the ball towards the goal and off of the stick of Cashman, who redirected it into the top of the cage.
Princeton will next play Friday at home against Penn in its Ivy League opener.

On a day that was steamy, with the sun baking the Rutgers turf, nobody was hotter than Rutgers freshman goalie Emily Nicholls, who made 13 saves and pretty much single-handedly forced the game to go as long as it did. Princeton outshot Rutgers 20-5 and had six penalty corners in regulation but could not sneak anything past Nicholls, who even turned aside a penalty stroke attempt with little more than three minutes remaining in regulation. Here's the game-winner. pic.twitter.com/y1GpDQKKQH
