Princeton Splits Duals with Hofstra and Lock Haven at Journeymen Armbar
January 04, 2026 | Wrestling
CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. – Competing at the Journeymen Armbar, the Princeton wrestling team split duals with Hofstra and Lock Haven, starting the day with a dominant 36-6 win over Hofstra before falling to Lock Haven, 28-6.
Ty Whalen and Marc-Anthony McGowan went 2-0 on the day, with each earning a tech fall or a pin in their first match.
How It Happened
The Tigers were dominant against Hofstra, winning eight of the ten matches with two pins and two tech falls.
McGowan (125) started the action, scoring just seconds into the match and making three takedowns in the first period as he built up a lead over Teague Strobel. Continuing to score, McGowan found himself falling just short of a tech while taking a 17-4 major decision to get Princeton on the board.
Dan Jones (133) also looked strong, relentlessly scoring as he worked his way up to a 13-0 lead before even allowing an escape. Jones would continue on, ultimately taking a 17-1 tech fall over Gauge Shipp to add to the Tiger lead.
Matthew Martino (141) gutted out a 7-1 decision over Chase Liardi, with Eligh Rivera (149) following suit as he took a 7-3 decision over Alex Turley.
Whalen (165) had a brief match with Jake Slotnick, as he made an early takedown before getting Slotnick on his back to get the pin in just 1:56.
Holden Garcia (174) also had a solid performance as he worked his way to a 19-3 tech over Eric Shindel, making a final takedown to end the match with a minute remaining in the second period.
A takedown with just seven seconds left pushed Xavier Giles (184) into major territory as he took an 11-3 MD over Matt Weddell.
Finishing the dual strong, Sebastian Garibaldi (285) took a 4-1 lead into the third period before maneuvering Adrian Sans onto his back to get a pin. With the result, Garibaldi sealed up the 36-6 win for Princeton.
Against Lock Haven, Whalen and McGowan were the only Tigers to come away with a result.
McGowan kept a clean sheet as he took a 5-0 decision over Curtis Nelson to start the dual. Whalen, facing Ousamane Duncanson, used a pair of back-to-back takedowns to build up a lead as he took a 15-8 decision.
Despite some other good looks, including Rivera, who ultimately fell short in a 5-2 match against Luka Kapusta, Lock Haven would take the second dual of the day, 28-6.
