Princeton Bounces Back, Takes Down UNC 5-2
February 08, 2026 | Men's Tennis
The Princeton men's tennis team had less than 48 hours to turn the page on a tough Friday night loss to start its weekend in North Carolina. Whatever the Tigers did to put that behind them, it definitely worked.
Princeton bounced back to take down North Carolina 5-2 Sunday afternoon in Chapel Hill, this after a 4-3 loss at No. 13 North Carolina State in that Friday match.
"I'm proud of our guys' coming back today and earning a gritty win after a heartbreaker on Friday night," said Princeton head coach Billy Pate. "We talked about embracing those close moments because they happen in every match. Our schedule has been one of the toughest in the country thus far, and we've been able to be in some challenging situations, which is allowing us to be battle tested."
The Tigers, already with the doubles point, picked up wins by Paul Inchauspe at No. 1 singles and Milan Markovits at No. 5 and led 3-2 with two matches still on the court, both in the third set. Those two matches ended about one minute apart and were both Tigers wins, from Sebastian Sec at No. 4 and Aleksandar Mitric at No. 6. Sec, ranked No. 96 in the latest ITA singles rankings, knocked off UNC's Niels Ratiu, ranked 59th, 6-4. 4-6, 6-1.
Princeton will next host the ECAC championships this coming Friday through Sunday.
"We look forward to hosting the ECAC this weekend and welcoming the other seven Ivy teams," Pate says. "It will be another set of great opportunities for our squad and we are looking excited to build on our success."
