Before Princeton: Bertrand is the Maryland Gatorade Cross Country Athlete of the Year. The honor is notable because his senior year was his first year running cross country. The state 4A champion won by 25 seconds with the third best time in Maryland state meet history. Bertrand went on to finish 12th at the Foot Locker Northeast Regional. Outdoors he was the state champion in the 3200 at 9:29 and second in the state in the 1600 at 4:21.
