Costas begins his second season with Princeton in the spring of 2022.
For the first time since 2003, the Tigers won the varsity eight national championship, cruising to a dominating 26.3-second victory over Wisconsin. The team won the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) women's lightweight crew of the year while Paul Rassam was named Coach of the Year.
The 2020 spring season was cancelled due to the coronavirus.
Costas has spent year before Princeton as the Director of Rowing Operations and Business Development at Row New York. Some of the highlights during his time there include keeping equipment in good repair across three sites including 45 rowing shells, six road vehicles, three rowing trailers, 25 launches, and 150 ergs. He generated and executed a $250,000 annual capital equipment budget.
Prior to Row New York, Costas was a varsity assistant coach and Boatman at the Brunswick School for two years. He was part of the daily collaboration with all of the coaches to develop practice and equipment plans. Costas also created a communication process with video uploading to make rigging recommendations.
The assistant also designed data-driven winter training programs for the full team, kept morale high with fun and creative themed competitions, increased regular participation in winter training, met monthly with each athlete to discuss personal goals and feedback. He also coached the Second Varsity 8+ that matched a program-best finish of 4th at the NEIRA regatta. As a freshman coach the two years prior, he helped the unit to two straight undefeated seasons.
Costas also volunteered at MIT where he coached practices for walk-on athletes and the Varsity 4+. He also worked in concert with team’s larger training plan design while accounting for athlete-specific needs. The coach also created daily practice plans for the Varsity 4+ and the varsity team’s core endurance workouts.
Costas graduated from the University of Virginia in 2013 with a degree in Anthropology. He was a three-year member of the rowing team and also swam.
