Steve Coppola, an Olympic medalist and one of the driving forces on Princeton's most recent heavyweight EARC championship boat, is in his eighth season as an assistant coach with the Princeton open rowing team.
Coppola has been an integral member in building the depth in the Princeton rowing program, which has helped the Tigers win five of the last six Ivy League championships while continuing to be one of the top programs at the NCAA Championships.
Over the last two seasons, Princeton has shocked top-ranked Brown to win one Ivy League title (2016), while repeating with a record-setting run down Cooper River (2017). Each of the the NCAA boats has reached their respective NCAA final at least once. Both the V8 and the 2V8 also went on the win the 2016 Women's Henley Regatta.
Last year, Princeton went 12-1 in the regular season, including a perfect 7-0 in the Ivy League, and won a third straight Ivy League team title. The 1V returned to the NCAA grand final for the first time since 2013 and placed fifth overall, three spots higher than the boat's seed.
Coppola led one of the greatest Princeton heavyweight boats in program history to the 2006 EARC/Ivy League title, a silver medal at the IRA national championships, and the No. 1 national ranking. He had an impressive international rowing career, which included a spot on the U.S.A. men’s eight at the 2008 Summer Olympics; Coppola helped the U.S.A. to a bronze medal at the Beijing Games.
