Mike Maira joined the track and field staff in 2016, specializing in the pole vault.
Maira has coached Princeton vaulters to eight Heps Championships titles, two NCAA titles, and five new school and Ivy League records. These include Allison Harris, who set Ivy League records in the indoor and outdoor pole vault, and had NCAA appearances both indoor and outdoor 2017. Harris’ records were broken in the 2024 season by Tessa Mudd, who now holds both the Princeton and Ivy League indoor and outdoor pole vault records. The 2024 season also saw Mudd earn her first NCAA Championship appearances, as she qualified both indoors and outdoors.
Sondre Guttormsen broke both the school and Ivy League record in 2022 indoor and out, and took home a first place finish at both the indoor and outdoor NCAA championships in 2022. His brother, Simen Guttormsen, finished fourth at both meets and second at both Heps.
Maira is a three-time state champion vaulter in his native New Jersey holding both a school record and facility records, a licensed skydiver, and author. He has a BA and MS from the University of Tennessee where he was a four-time letter winner pole vaulter for the Volunteers.
