EMAIL COACH HAGSTROM at tylerhagstrom@princeton.edu
Tyler Hagstrom didn't waste any time making a positive impact on the Princeton volleyball program. In his first two seasons as assistant coach, Hagstrom helped the Tigers win back-to-back Ivy League titles and make consecutive appearances in the NCAA Championships.
Hagstrom helped the Tigers make it back to the NCAA Tournament in 2019, as Princeton overcame Yale in an Ivy playoff and earned its spot. He also helped mentor six All-Ivy honorees; Maggie O'Connell, Jesse Harris, Clare Lenihan, Cameron Dames, Devon Peterkin and Natasha Skov.
In 2018, Princeton nearly made more NCAA history. The Tigers went 19-6 with two Big Ten wins, and they went 12-2 in Ivy play to miss the title by one match. They were named as one of the final four teams left out of the NCAA tournament; no Ivy team has ever received an at-large bid to the national championships.
Princeton returned to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2007 and pushed #10 BYU in a tight three-set match to conclude the 2016 season. The Tigers earned their NCAA bid after a 13-1 Ivy League season, in which they won both individual player awards and placed five starters on the All-Ivy League team.
The 2017 path to the NCAA Championships may not have been as dominant, but it was certainly just as exciting. Princeton made up a two-match deficit over the final five and defeated Yale in the Ivy League playoff match to return to the NCAAs, where the Tigers fell in three sets to 13th-seeded Iowa State.
In both seasons, Princeton led the Ivy League with five all-league players, and it produced the Player of the Year both times (Cara Mattaliano in 2016, Maggie O'Connell in 2017).
While Hagstrom has provided significant assistance in both practices and match preparation, he is also a talented recruiter who assists King in bringing elite talent to the program.
Hagstrom came to Princeton from Grand Canyon University, where he served as both assistant coach and, for a brief tenure, interim head coach for one season. Besides coordinating the defensive system, Hagstrom led both the recruiting and scouting efforts.
His first collegiate coaching experience came during a two-year stint at UC-Irvine, where he worked primarily with blockers and backcourt defense. He managed several functions for the team, including data analysis and work with the admissions office.
Hagstrom began coaching after a national championship career as the libero for California Baptist. He worked with several high school and top club programs in California, including Prime Volleyball Club/Saddleback Volleyball Club (Orange County) and the HBC Boys Volleyball Club (Huntington Beach).
Hagstrom led Cal-Baptist to three NAIA national championships as the starting libero, and he led the tournament field in digs while helping the team to the 2005 title. He broke the single-season dig record in 2005 — five of them came during a victory over the Princeton men. In fact, Hagstrom went 3-0 against Princeton during his career.
