Princeton, N.J. - Melanie Meerschwam (Jr., Amstelveen, The Netherlands) broke open a close game with a pair of second-half goals to lead the Princeton University field hockey team to a 3-0 win over local rival Rutgers. The Tigers improved to 6-1 overall as they head into a big weekend against Ivy opponent Brown and nationally ranked Duke.
After a scoreless first half, Ilvy Friebe (Fr., Bonn, Germany) connected on a penalty corner to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. From there, Meerschwam took over the offense. She set up a play that eventually ended in a penalty corner, which she shot in the top of the cage to beat Rutgers goalie Abby Joseph. Meerschwam also scored on a penalty corner later in the half, giving Princeton all the insurance it would need.
Although Princeton dominated the first-half stats, Rutgers had the best scoring chance of the half. Andschana Mendes (So., Lebanon, N.J.) flicked a penalty corner that hit the crossbar and bounced away. The Tigers clamped down from there, limiting Rutgers to only a few opportunities in the final minutes.
Kelly Baril (Fr., Peabody, Mass.) made three saves in winning her sixth game of the season. It was also her third career shutout.
