PRINCETON, N.J. - Princeton regained bragging rights of Mercer County as the Tigers defeated local-rival Rider 4-0 in women's soccer action on Lourie-Love Field tonight. The win stretched Princeton's unbeaten streak to eight games with Lehigh coming to town on Wednesday.
The Tigers played a frustrating first half that saw Princeton outshoot the Broncs 17-1, but had trouble finishing scoring opportunities in the penalty area. With less than four minutes remaining in the opening stanza, Linley Gober (So., Atlanta, Ga.) saved a ball and sent it to the feet of Josie Francica (Fr., Paramus, N.J.) in front of the goal. With the Rider goalie coming out, Francica, who had been in the game less than 30 seconds, passed the ball to a cutting Amee Reyes (Jr., Wheeling, W.Va.), who drilled a shot to the back of the net for Princeton's first goal.
Princeton came out with more fire in the second half. Ten minutes after intermission the Tigers had extended their lead to 3-0 on a pair of goals by Francica and Joan Cundey (Fr., Bay Village, Ohio). Francica's second goal of the year came on a header off a corner kick by senior Susan Rea (Palo Alto, Calif.) in the 50th minute. Cundey took a deep pass from Dana DeCore (Sr., Pennington, N.J.) and fired a bullet past Rider goalie Lynda Acchitielli (So., Turnersville, N.J.) at the 54:10 mark. Jennie Platt (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) rounded out the scoring and tallied her first goal of the season, as she headed home a corner from Rea with 29:16 remaining in the game. Princeton's defense held tight in the final minutes to come away with the four-goal victory.
Goalkeepers Jordan Rettig (Jr., West Hartford, Conn.) and Catherine Glenn (So., Jacksonville, Fla.) combined for the shutout. Despite giving up four goals, Acchitielli had a tremendous performance in net for the Broncs, recording 11 saves.
Princeton is now 7-2-1 on the year and will host Patriot League foe Lehigh on Wed., Oct. 13. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. at Lourie-Love Field. The men follow with a game against Loyola at 8 p.m.
