Princeton Breaks Into Win Column With 4-0 Victory

PRINCETON, N.J. - Freshman Krista Ariss (Burlington, Ont.) scored in the fourth minute of the first half to give the Princeton women's soccer team a lead it would never relinquish, as the Tigers won their home opener against Ivy foe Cornell 4-0.
Ariss' first half goal was all the offense Princeton needed, but three other Tigers added insurance goals in the four-goal shutout. The goal was not only the newcomer's first collegiate goal, but also the first goal for the Tigers this season, after 1-0 and 2-0 losses to Clemson and Furman, respectively, to open the 1999 campaign.
At the 3:49 mark, Ariss cut across the net and headed home a corner kick off the foot of Julie Shaner (Jr., Gwynedd Valley, Pa.) to open scoring. Fifteen minutes later Shaner got her first goal of the season on a curving shot from the left side past Cornell keeper Meghan Cauzillo. Defensive specialist Susan Rea (Palo Alto, Calif.) got in the scoring action, as the senior shot a bullet past the left post off a Big Red clear that went right to her feet. Last year's leading scorer Amee Reyes (Jr., Wheeling, WVa.) rounded out the scoring with a breakaway goal at the 35:41 mark.
Princeton mustered little offense in the second half, tallying only four of the team's 12 shots after intermission. Twenty-one Tigers saw action, including six freshmen, as head coach Julie Shackford went to her bench for a large part of the second half.
The Tigers are now 1-2 on the year, 1-0 in Ivy competition. Princeton will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 22, as it travels to local rival Rutgers. Game time is set for 6 p.m. The women's soccer match against Rider that was postponed due to weather has been rescheduled for Monday, Oct. 11, at Lourie-Love Field in Princeton.
