PRINCETON, N.J.— Although it had ample opportunities to end their current skid, the No., 17 Princeton University field hockey team dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 contest to unranked Syracuse today at Class of 1952 Stadium. The Tigers have lost four games in a row and fall to 6-5 overall. The Orangewomen are now 10-5.
After a scoreless first half, Kelly Hambleton (Sr., Ivyland, Pa.) gave Syracuse the lead with a penalty stroke that deflected off the blocker of Kelly Baril (Fr., Peabody, Mass.) and went into the cage. Melanie Meerschwam (Jr., Amsteveen, The Netherlands) had an opportunity to answer with her own stroke, but it sailed right of the cage later in the half.
The Tigers would have other opportunities, including an open-net tip by Kate Carroll (Sr., West Brookfield, Mass.) that hit the post. The Tigers took 21 shots and had 12 corners overall, but could not solve goalkeeper Audrey Latsko (Fr., Emmaus, Pa.).
Princeton will travel to Boston for a crucial two-game weekend, starting with an Ivy contest against Harvard on Oct. 24.
