SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Princeton women's soccer team battled inclement weather and wet field conditions, but left Seton Hall with a 1-0 victory this afternoon. Senior co-captain Dana DeCore (Pennington, N.J.) found the back of the net in the 56th minute to give Princeton its 10th win of the year.
Princeton dominated play for the majority of the game, but were unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities early in the contest. The Tigers held a nine to one advantage in shots during the first half, but went into intermission scoreless. A long ball by defender Susan Rea (Sr., Palo Alto, Calif.) set-up DeCore for what proved to be the game-winning goal. Pirate goalkeeper Leah Miller made a play for the ball on the right post but slipped on the extremely muddy field. The ball bounced off her hands, and DeCore was able to get to the ball on the end line and slip it under the crossbar into the right corner of the net. The goal was DeCore's fifth of the year. "I booted a blooper ball into the penalty area. I thought it was going out of bounds, but Dana caught up with it somehow and got it past the goalkeeper," Rea says. "Playing with these conditions, I expected a goal like that."
"It was one of those days we could not find the back of the net, but a win is a win," head coach Julie Shackford says. "The ball was sticking in the box, and it was hard for the players to know how the ball would react."
Seton Hall played without leading scorer Kelly Smith, who served a mandatory one-game suspension for accumulating five yellow cards during the season. Smith received her fifth yellow card in the Pirates' win over Syracuse on Sunday. The Herman Trophy finalist has 19 goals and five assists on the year.
The Tigers unbeaten streak now stands at 11 games, dating back to the third game of the season. Princeton's only losses came in the first two games of the season at the Clemson/Nike Invitational in Clemson, S.C. The Orange and Black will put that streak on the line this Saturday as it travels to Cambridge for a league match-up with No. 17 Harvard in a battle of the Ivy unbeaten.
"We face a very talented team (on Saturday). There is not a weakness on the team," Shackford says. "They are very technical and very confident right now."
